From its first election poster with Alex Salmond in Miliband's pocket, the Conservative Party and its media backers have stoked fear/hatred of the SNP and Scotland in general as its prime campaign theme. The fact that so many people are now taking up the message shows how effective it has been. If it wasn't for the SNP threatening most Labour seats in Scotland, Labour would almost certainly be strong favourites to win at least the most seats. So this strategy makes sense as a parochial party tactic. But I (a non-Conservatie) am not the only person to think the biggest threat to the UK is this dangerous and disreputable strategy. Daily Mail favourites Norman Tebbit and Peter Hitchens are among the Conservatives supporters who agree with me. See for example Peter Hitchens Daily Mail article of 26 April: 'When Tebbit says vote Labour, you know something's gone very wrong' in which he articulates even stronger criticism than I have. like: "Asked if he [Tebbit] was advising Tory supporters to vote Labour where it is contesting seats with the SNP, he said: 'I hesitate to say that. But it is logical from where I stand.' "Of course it is. Anyone who seriously wants to keep Scotland in the UK must seek to stop the rise of the SNP, not to fuel and encourage it. Lord Tebbit is not the only Tory who has been appalled by the deliberate boosting of the SNP's Nicola Sturgeon by such figures as Chief Whip Michael Gove and Chancellor George Osborne. "Both these men have acted like student politicians, helping one enemy to do down another. This may work in the tail-coated silly-clever struggles of the Oxford Union. But it is quite wrong when a real country is at stake." Read more at: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-3055720/PETER-HITCHENS-Tebbit-says-vote-Labour-know-s-gone-wrong.html#ixzz3Z0kqMEBh |
