Sounds different so you're probably right to have said nothing. I took some pictures of one of the trees this AM and - as requested - sent them to the editor, so as I've no idea how to post them here, I'll wait and see if they write something about it instead. But it's more than just "peeling strips of the silver birch" - it's deep gashes and chunks of bark taken off. (Silver birches seem to "shed" their skin in thin layers or something). As you can tell, I know very little about trees :), but I do know that they had to cut one down, with one more seemingly on the way, because of this.
