| Charlotte, the "hard wiring" you refer to would have occurred about 40 million years ago, as wolves / dogs first evolved. This is when that hard wiring took place. Dogs have only been domesticated by humans in the last 15,000 years ago, a mere blink of an eye in evolutionary terms. Dog DNA, or "hardwiring" did not change simply because humans started living in houses for the last 200 hundred years. And it seems to me that dogs (like many humans, I might say) have indeed turned into wimps. They can't cope with being alone in the garden? When did that happen then? I recently read the biography of Ernest Shackleton, and the journey of the James Caird (Tom Crean, Frank Worsley...). Just imagine trying to explain to men of that calibre what soft, delicate little petals we (and our dogs) have all become. |
