The Old Packhorse is a popular pub and listed building, its a great example of its kind (note this is not the Packhorse & Talbot on the front page). This will not be touched by the proposed development. I would though say that generally this end of the high road is flourishing, lots of great restaurants and cafes, bar the stretch of empty shops awaiting development. The point is that the proposed 6-8 storey blocks are completely out of keeping with the local area, the proerties and and mansion blocks around the green are 3-5 storeys, bar empire House the rest of CHR is all 3-4 storeys. There is no rationale for the new blocks to be more than 4-6 storeys, and the one on the junction of Acton Lane and Essex Place should also be 4-5 storeys, in keeping with the local street scene and indeed the new flats built just across the road from this site (4 storeys). Most people appreciate the character and nature of Chiswick, which is essentially low rise. This is recognised by Hounslow in past local plans and the Turnham Green conservation area appraisal. It was also very eloquently stated by Councillor Cadbury when she spoke at the first CHRAG meeting, where she stated her commitment to maintaining that character. It was a past and to some degree present ambition of local plans to see Empire House demolished, now it seems its OK to make it even taller. Unfortunately, we are suffering height creep, as at the business park and up Bollo Lane. These developments will define the local area for generations, so we should ensure that they are appropriate. |
