Caroline - it is not true that HAWs will not place a kitten with a home with a dog - it depends on the dog, their experience with kittens/cats and possibly the number of dogs.  One of my fosters was adopted by a forum member who has a dog so I have personal experience of this.

Also, it is not true that they will not adopt to someone over 60 - if there are next of kin measures put in place and possibly (I haven't comfirmed this) the health of the over 60 person then the adoption can go ahead.  Admittedly HAWs prefer to home older cats with older people, partly because older people may find a kitten or two very much of a handful (if you haven't had kittens before or it was a long time ago you had them people may not realise how energetic they are, how you may need to train them out of destructive behaviour or just how much kitten-proofing homes need initially) and you have to allow for a kitten possibly living for up to 20 years.

Please remember that HAWs "restrictions" are all a result of past experiences (including trustees experiences at other National rehoming charities) and not being approved as an adopter can be as a result of cumulative personal circumstances and, if one is home checked, the home checker's personal judgement of the potential adopters realism, circumstances and readiness for being a pet owner.
