Sam, there may be rescue centres who would accept your situation, try the Mayhew, for example, but you can understand why they may have reservations.   My cats and dogs live very happily together but that is not always the case, I got my first cats around the same time as I got my dog so they grew up together as puppies/kittens, and I would only ever introduce another rescue dog now (unless a puppy) if it had been cat-tested.  If you are going to buy from a private breeder, please make sure it is over 12 -13 weeks when you buy it, has had the two sets of injections etc.  Has your dog been cat-tested, ie do you know it will get on with a cat?  You really do not want a terrified cat - moving homes is bad enough for a cat without being hunted by a strange dog within an inch of its life - or at worst a dead cat if your dog kills it, which it could do.  You can understand the caution of rescue centres where the cats they have have often had a lot of trauma in their lives already.    May be worth registering with some vets in case they know of cats who are used to dogs that come up for rehoming.   But it is vital you get your dog used to cats before you introduce one into the home or you could literally have fur flying.
