| When Gordon Brown introduced the stepped system I was stunned by its stupidity. I spent ages trying to see any logic behind it on the mistaken belief that he was the Chancellor and must have a vastly superior financial brain than mine. The new system is better but over complex in my view. (Below is a link to a calculator that makes life a lot easier) What was the problem with the way it was levied years ago? A fixed percentage was charged of say 1. 5 % on any purchase. A buyer at 150,000 would pay £2,250 whereas a buyer at £5,000,000 would pay £75,000. Seems fair to me. Back in the day Stamp Duty started at £15,000 …..
