The scam, as I understand it, is the thief locks their bike to yours, so you leave your bike in the rack, assuming that the other person will come back at some stage and unlock it. However it is really just for the thief to buy more time so they can come back later with less people around and know there is a bike worth stealing. A set of bolt cutters will get through a cheap lock in 5-10 seconds and even the most expensive locks can be broken in 1-2 minutes with a portable angle grinder.. In general, I think most people don't notice or do anything if they see someone fiddling with a bike in a bike rack as they just assume it is the owner. |
