| Can we really trust Labour on the Third Runway? It was reported in GetWest London on the 28th May 2014 that; "New Hanworth councillor Richard Foote says a third runway is 'essential' to secure Heathrow's long-term future but adequate compensation must be guaranteed before it gets the go-ahead. The new councillor [NOW IN THE HOUNSLOW LABOUR CABINET]is believed to be the first in Hounslow to publicly speak out in favour of a third runway at Heathrow. Speaking after he was elected last Friday (May 23) Richard Foote, Labour councillor for Hanworth, said Heathrow, and not Gatwick, was the 'obvious' choice for a new runway. He said a new runway at Heathrow would be 'essential' in the long-term ....... Asked whether he would prefer to see a new runway at Heathrow or Gatwick, given the choice, he said: "It's obvious: Heathrow.....I think a third runway at Heathrow will be essential in the long-term." Mr Foote, a 70-year-old grandfather-of-two is a former British Airways cargo manager and has previously been a councillor in Hanworth, where he was born and bred. In recent months, the council's regeneration team has been promoting the benefits a third runway could bring to potential investors." Cllr Curran the Leader of Hounslow Council said in reply to a question by me at the Borough Council meeting last week that Cllr Foote had experienced "a rush of blood to the head immediately after the election". Cllr Foote made no comment. Hard to know who to believe? But MP Mary Macleod has regularly repeated her long held position that Heathrow Airport should be "better not bigger". She supports another runway at Gatwick. |
