They won't support Heathrow, not least because two of the twelve Labour target seats they need to win in London are the Chiswick ones (and one of the others is Battersea, actually, where the previous Labour incumbent lost his seat after accidentally voting for the Government on a Heathrow motion in 2009):

Ed Balls, of course, supported LHR3 in the Brown cabinet, as only two members of that were opposed - Hilary Benn and Ed Miliband.  I've no reason to doubt Ruth Cadbury's opposition, either, and she's the one we'll be asked to vote for, not Balls.

It's also important to note the large pro-Heathrow expansion faction around the current Chancellor - they exist in both parties.

I still think, regardless of what Davies suggests, whatever government is in power will back Gatwick as the least controversial option - it would work, would cost the government less, would annoy fewer marginal voters and wouldn't bugger up west London.  I just wish London's idiot Mayor had been pushing Gatwick R2 two years ago instead of wasting everyone's time with his vanity airport.
