Unless they build HS3 between Gatwick and Heathrow, an additional runway at Gatwick will not stop the agitation for further expansion at Heathrow. Even with an HS3 creating "Heathwick" there will still be lobbying to enlarge Heathrow. Gatwick, after all, is far less convenient for access for anyone coming from north of London.
I just wish the idiot Wilson government in the 1970s had not canned Maplin, so that we just go through the same performance again and again. It is a crying shame that no-one in power is willing to grasp the nettle and build a new hub airport somewhere where the approach and take-off routes are over water instead of wasting everyone's time with their commissions which are basically fig-leaves to cover their dithering.
Whatever they say now, or in their manifesto, you can't trust Labour. |
