I haven't seen the programme but could it just be the usual of trying to make 'good' television? (Yawn)
Mind you, I must admit that I had a lodger many years ago who was studying catering on a course at a local (then) college and he truly never cooked anything for himself other than shop-bought cheesy pancakes, fried in a pan. The frying pan was then washed with one finger laconically circling the pan under running tepid (at best) water.
I do find it a shame though that young people are being portrayed in the way you describe - I am sure/hope that there are many out there who work very hard and who have a good understanding and knowledge of their subject.
