There was never a golden age when employers deliberately kept wages high. It's just that now there is a good supply of labour and employers pay what they need to pay to get the workers they want to do the jobs. The huge salaries are paid for people where the choice before the employer is not so great. Wayne Rooney is paid millions for booting a ball around even when he loses - care workers on zero hour contracts look after the sick and dying on minimum wage. |
