We went along today to visit this fine Chiswick institution for the very last time. We remembered that for many years Adamou & Sons was the only shop in Chiswick where one could find many groceries one could not find anyuwhere else. I was pleased to see that the closing down sale was a success and the shelves were nearly empty. I asked Mr Adamou why he was closing and he said "Business rates, parking and supermarkets". He showed me the Business Rates demand from Hounslow Council and it was astonishigly high. When all local authority charges are taken inmto account, Hoiunslow Council had to be paid about £3,000 per month just to keep the shop open.  You have to sell an awful lot of fruit, veg and olive oil to make a profit of £3,000 a month. Now we understand why family-owned shops and businesses are disappearing from our High Road and high streets all over the country to be replaced by chains such as Sainsbury, Tesco, Morrison and Waitrose. This is a sad day for Chiswick. The Adamou's own the premises and hopefully a new business will start there in due course.But hopefully it will not be yet another over-priced restaurant or coffee shop and that the tiles on the west wall and some of the character of the place will be reatined.
