Whilst I agree with you about light entertainment I think you are being slightly unfair about BBC Drama. The Street by Jimmy McGovern was one of the best things to appear on TV in the last decade and he has a new series coming soon called the Accused with Christopher Eccleston. He himself has criticised the Beeb for too much 'costume and irony' but the fact that they give him regular work is to their credit.
