| I've just finished watching This is England 86 the very excellent drama produced and broadcast by Channel 4. It is the sort of thing a few decades or so the BBC might have produced routinely but they would be incapable of doing now. As well as drama being less representative of the nation light entertainment seems to be the domain of a narrow clique of former footlights members who may tolerate the occasional regional accent on one of their shows but certainly wouldn't grant anything other than the occasional guest spot. The obvious way to cut costs and reduce the pension deficit was to transfer more production out of London but staff have fought tooth and nail to stop this happening. |
