You’re correct that I don’t represent the Church or the parish. But I can share what’s been published in the parish newsletter. Over the past two weeks, the newsletter has highlighted concerns about the proposed Cycleway 9 design outside the church. The main worries are about losing or narrowing the pavement, how it might affect pedestrians and parishioners gathering before and after Mass, funerals, and processions, and possible safety issues with the new layout. Last week, parishioners were encouraged to get in touch with the Council and request a full public consultation. This week’s newsletter shares the Council’s response: the designs are still “at draft stage and are being reviewed internally and with TfL.” There will be a chance for residents and businesses to give feedback when public engagement details come out in October. The newsletter calls this “welcome news.” From what I see, the newsletter isn’t against Cycleway 9 itself. It’s mainly concerned about this specific design outside the church and is asking for proper public consultation before any decisions are made. No doubt individual Catholics, including parishioners, will have a range of views on Cycleway 9, just as the wider Chiswick community does. As far as I’m aware, one’s position on cycle lanes is not an article of the Catholic faith. People are free to agree or disagree with the concerns raised in the newsletter. Still, my main point is that none of this justifies replying with “Never trust a Catholic.”
