Maria, if you live on Weltje Road and supported this scheme, you would have every right to condemn people who didn't live there and opposed it. However, most of your neighbours appear not to agree with the plan presumably on the basis that the access restrictions will cause more hassle than the reduction in the number of vehicles going down their road.

The timing of this seems odd. After the initial carnage for cyclists at the Weltje Road junction when Cycleway 9 was introduced, to the best of my knowledge there have been no serious injuries at this junction. You can credit that to the belated improved junction design or cyclists and motorist being more aware of the risks but, whatever the reason, the reduction in injuries undermines the safety argument for these changes.

Also thought needs to be given to where all these vehicles will now be crossing the cycleway. The main transfer will be to Chiswick Lane and Dukes Avenue junction. Michael has argued in the past that signalisation makes these safer and I would agree in the case of Chiswick Lane which, although disregarding of red lights is endemic, the sight lines are much better. Dukes Avenue on the other hand is clearly highly dangerous - ten minutes observation would make this apparent to anyone.

I've not seen a report of a serious accident here but over the last couple of years I've seen several close shaves here. Three times while I have been waiting at the lights on my bike going west an eastbound cyclist has continued on and had to come to an abrupt halt due to an east bound car turning left. Collisions were avoided by centimetres not metres. I'm not sure directing more vehicles to this junction is a good idea.
