| How quick you are to pour scorn on people who have a different opinion to yours and don’t express what they mean in a way that meets your approval. What Philippa is saying is that (some) pubs have diversified in what they offer to customers and the boozing now constitutes a smaller part their overall business. Alcohol is still a significant part, of course, but plenty of people go to pubs for other reasons, rather than solely for the purpose of drinking alcohol. Even I spent about 3 hours in a pub beer garden at the weekend in a group of about 10 people and we didn’t drink a drop of alcohol between us. Of course, if you feel the UK would be a better place if it was one of those nanny state countries like Afghanistan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Libya or Yemen where alcohol is outlawed you’re welcome to your opinion. |
