| I don't actually know that this has anything to do with pubs. That was just suggested.. Pubs nowadays anyway don't have so much to do with drinking alcohol as they once did since supermarkets started selling it so cheap. Surely it is better to drink openly socially and less than secretly and more. Since there are fewer places available to meet up and housing has in many cases reduced in size they have become meeting places for all sorts of clubs both organised and drop-in from mothers and babies, book clubs, lunch-clubs, music etc. So they have broadened from just selling alcohol to coffee mornings and juice to meals for those no longer able or willing to cook their own roast dinner.
