| Joined up thinking has never been the British way. The Santander scheme is part of the integrated network but there are logistical problems with it that won’t go away. The prime one of these is ending up with loads of machines at one end of a route and none at the other, which then requires a van (or vans) to pick them up and take them back. It’s also an issue when docking station capacity is reached at a particular location and hirers then spend some time looking for the nearest alternative, which annoys them, is counter-productive and can incur further cost if it takes them into another charging period. Station hubs have proven a particular problem for this. As is often the case with idealised solutions, the dream founders on reality. |
