| The fall in bike sales is surprising. If I was going to take a guess at the reason it is that far fewer older children seem to ride these days than 20 years ago. The attraction of screens may be eating into their leisure time. This could mean that the fall in adult sales is reflective of this trend as well and actual adult purchases are holding up well. There are definitely more families cycling together locally but that seems to be mainly with younger children who I sometimes think are being paraded to display the virtue of their parents. The concern would be that they will come to see cycling as something you do with your mum and dad, rather as than for previous generations, something you did to give you the personal freedom to get away from them. The average age of a lone cyclist in Chiswick, if you exclude delivery riders seems to be well in excess of forty, if not fifty, which has to be a concern. It is not impossible but it is a lot more difficult to be a confident cyclist on urban roads if you haven't cycled independently when you are younger. |
