Rob, respect of course to all opinions. What is being lost in this debate is two fundamental things. Firstly, we see the cumulative impact of road closures and also reductions in capacity of the remaining road network. So yes the Kew Bridge closure is a big factor, but lets not forget Hammersmith bridge remains shut with no end in sight. Traffic is already heavier as a result. We have half the bridges of Paris and there will always be roadworks on some. So it is pathetic for the govnt to pay politics and refuse to fully fund restoring the bridge, though moving it somewhere nice as a foot bridge and building a modern structure would be the sensible option here. Then we have all the road closures north of the A4, not just Fishers Lane but Wellesley and then CS9 meaning large reductions in capacity at key junctions along the High Road. We had the A4 and tube lines, now the High Road itself is becoming a major barrier to travel with a major cut in both north-south and west-east capacity. At the same time we cut public transport and make it far more expensive. The only solution is to get people using cars less. There are two options, one is to provide cheap, reliable and accessible public transport, with probably an expanded congestion charge to discourage commuters and leisure trips by car. The problem is the flow of traffic through W4 from outside the area, which is unchecked and google maps will only change routes when the alternative are quicker. But with for example the Hogarth a major pinchpoint, even more so now for westbound traffic due to queues trying to turn onto the A316, A4 traffic diverting into W4 is even greater. The current solution is to create congestion and hope that people give up trips or car use. Its not worked before and means more congestion and pollution, plus given the reduced capacity in the network means extended gridlock across W4 as we have seen not just yesterday but over the last couple of months will become the new normal.
