| The convenience sector has about 20% of the grocery market and that's forecast to grow by 25% over the next 5 years - partly due to the increase in home working. That's the Tesco Metros and Sainsbury Locals on the high street which don't have parking and are often located by tube stations for those shopping on foot. The "big shop" with the car - the one that people in the thread were mocking cyclists for being unable to accomplish - is increasingly the reserve of the older demographic and in decline - replaced with online deliveries and regular drop ins at local stores. About the only time I take the car to the supermarket is when I'm on holiday. The last time I did it in the UK was probably about 10 years ago. All this outrage that it is now inconvenient to drive to Sainsbury's and now people are forced to go to Morrisons and that's the death of the high street - it is completely irrelevant to me and many other people, particularly those with young families where the idea of taking the kids to a supermarket as a family activity is just ridiculous. The last thing we want is a rammed fridge and fully stocked shelves - half of it got thrown away anyway. It is much more convenient (and less wasteful) to buy 1-2 days worth of food locally, and if you like your food, go and buy it fresh from a local Chiswick bakery, butcher or fishmonger, not bloody Morrisons! |
