Mark Talbot said "You can not do a large family shop by foot or by bike before I have that one thrown back." I think you will find it is perfectly possible to do a big food shop on a bike. Simply buy a cargo bike and install racks and panniers over the back wheel and a lockable metal box on the rear rack. For those that want / have to come shopping with you simply invest in a trailer for the children and the Grandparents. You can then wear two backpacks, one on your back and one on your front and for those extra essentials you could adopt the Nigerian approach and balance a pot on your head which would double as a crash helmet and collect fresh water when it rains.
