| Spending a few hours on Chiswick High Road poses no risk to your health. Although it is right that we aim for better air quality some of the current claims being made about its impact verge on hysteria. The widely repeated claim about 20,000 people dying prematurely each year due to pollution is based on a very dubious use of statistics. As someone pointed out on this forum you could just as validly claim eating KitKats results in the same death toll. I wear contact lenses so I am quite sensitised to poor air quality. Chiswick High Road is usually fine unless there is stationary traffic. Under normal conditions it is a lot better than many other parts of London and nowhere near as polluted as many cities in the world I have visited. Over the last couple of decades it has got much better. If you don't agree no problem. I am quite happy for others to hide themselves inside on the rare sunny days that we can enjoy a meal outside. |
