A fascinating posting, Fraser, particularly your description of the Muslim Reformation, which seems to have been the precise mirror-image of the European one. I'd often wondered how Islam moved from being a culture of world-leading mathematicians and astronomers to today's position where in some establishments knowledge and enlightenment, and some activities, such as dancing and art, are considered un-Islamic and forbidden by the Koran. This is why it is vital that all schools in this country are rigorously inspected by the DfE to ensure that whatever religion they adhere to, they are teaching what we consider to be the essentials of a modern, 21st century enlightened and sceptical culture, free from superstition and fanaticism.
