| "There is nothing new on this sorry planet." There have been many European examples of religious intolerance and mass murder for being the wrong faith, too. 1934-45 springs to mind, there have been plenty of pogroms against Jews in many European countries, there's the Spanish Inquisition (which ordered Jews and Muslims to convert to Catholicism in amongst all manner of other holier-than-though torturing and murdering), right up to the Bosnian War of the early 1990s where professing the wrong faith or speaking the wrong language could earn you a bullet in the head. What's worth examining, given that people are the same everywhere, is how we mostly managed to stop doing it in western Europe since 1945. |
