Topic: The Government still opposes the Third Runway.

Michael Fallon MP, the new Business Minister, and Mary Macleod MP emphatically ruled out any change in the Government's opposition to the Third Runway on the BBC last night. The Conservative Party knows that it stands to lose a lot of seats in London and the South-East if it changes its policy on this.

Menzies Campbell, the former Lib Dem leader, agreed with Mary Mcleod on Newsnight last night that opposition to the Third Runway is an important part of the Coalition Agreement and is not subject to change.

Those who support a Third Runway are obviously lobbying hard but those who oppose it are also  very influential.

The promotion of former Transport Minister, Theresa Villiers MP, to the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland strenghens those within the Cabinet who are opposed to the Third Runway. Justine Greening is still in the Cabinet and in fact will now be in a position to speak out more independently on this issue as she is no longer responsible for Transport policy and obliged to listen to both sides of the argument.

The new Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLaughlin, represents Derbyshire Dales and like many MP's from the Midlands and the North may favour expanding airport capacity closer to their constituenciwss in places like Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Teesside, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
