IMHO do no use MDF EVER, or Hardboard - they are just compressed wood pulp. Even moisture resistant is just that - moisture resistant. Also they come out of moulds with a slight wax finish - not great for adhesive.

If you are talking about a timber joist floor then the Rolls royce version if you are trying to avoid cracking is a sub floor of 18mm WBP ply SCREWED to the joists. On top of that I ALWAYS use a movement matting http://www.schluter.co.uk/matting.aspx (ditra is what it is commonly called)

If you don't mind the odd crack in the tiles then use 9mm ply with ring nails (slightly wet the ply before laying as it will shrink back to the nails).

If you are talking a concrete or screed floor then self-levelling screed (there is a mis-noma if ever there was one!) and either the ditra or a good adhesive will normally be OK - but it does depend on the tile/stone!

As the largest cost in any tile project is the laying then you might a well get it right in the beginning!

James
