According to the AA, petrol in the UK is the sixth most expensive in Europe and diesel in the UK is the second most expensive. AA SURVEY OF EUROPEAN FUEL PRICES -FEBRUARY 2008 UK pence per litre Country Petrol Diesel Austria 87.66 85.71 Belgium 107.98 86.31 Czech Republic 90.00 90.89 Denmark 106.00 98.75 Finland 105.43 90.13 France 99.21 88.18 Germany 102.58 94.26 Greece 80.76 81.66 Netherlands 115.10 91.71 Hungary 83.50 84.64 Ireland 89.16 89.68 Italy 102.73 100.78 Luxembourg 86.53 76.19 Estonia 72.83 79.54 Norway 116.07 113.14 Latvia 73.34 75.15 Lithuania 76.69 78.21 Poland 89.79 83.71 Slovakia 88.58 92.92 Slovenia 76.64 77.24 Portugal 102.66 88.03 Spain 81.21 77.91 Sweden 100.73 101.94 Switzerland 80.90 87.87 UK 104.00 109.30 And outside Europe but for comparison: USA 41.26 46.06 In a majority of countries excluding the UK, unleaded petrol is more expensive than diesel. However diesel is more expensive than petrol in the UK, USA, Switzerland and some Eastern European countries. UK diesel is 20 pence a litre more expensive than diesel in Ireland and 21 pence a litre more expensive than diesel in France- our two nearest neighbours. This makes a huge difference to the road haulage industry. UK unleaded petrol is 15 pence a litre more expensive than in Ireland and 5 pence a litre more expensive than in France. Neither France nor Ireland produce significant quantities of oil whereas the UK does.Ironically fuel in Norway is the most expensive in Europe- despite Norway's considerable oil production. |
