Will Maybe the real reason why I took the minibus was that I wanted to have a pint of Guiness while watching the rugby game but who knows ! You are right.More and more people are making such rational choices. However if fuel was twice as expensive I think many more people would vote with their feet and emigrate. UK emigration is indeed already at record levels at the moment. MP's for rural constituencies will be particularly reluctant to  vote for large tax increases in fuel. That's one of the reasons why fuel tax is much lower in countries like Ireland and France. The USA is the world's largest importer of oil and China is the world's second largest importer. Similarily the USA,India and China are still increasing their carbon emissions and it is hard to see how and when these trends will be reversed. By comparison the UK's energy imports and emissions are fairly small. However we should of course continue to try to reduce them. That's one of the reasons why we should oppose Heathrow Expansion.
