Thanks to the 'foresight' of earlier generations of house builders and estate developers across Chiswick, many of our streets have these now very 'mature' trees taking over and lifting the pavement. In Ealing, and from the picture, Hounslow seems to do the same, they periodically come along and re-contour the pavement surface with tarmac to remove cracks, but leave an awkward undulating surface to cover the large roots rather than digging them up, and an ever-narrowing gap for pedestrians to pass. Even if it were to be 'the sensible thing to do in the long term', I fear there'd be uproar if these trees were to be cut down and replaced with smaller new ones. So building the pavement out around them and into the road (in place of a parking space?), might well be an answer in some locations. |
