Lee Dykes, Brentford's technical director, was interviewed on Radio 5 Live this morning. He was surprisingly open about the recruitment methods used by the club and the way that they identified players. It seemed much less data based than I thought it was, I had always assumed that it was primarily driven by numbers generated as part of Matthew Benham's betting operations. He even queried whether algorithm was the appropriate word to describe the analysis used. I find it reassuring that he, Thomas Frank and the other staff do spend a lot of time watching targets at games rather than pouring over spreadsheets. On the other hand, it was slightly concerning to hear him talk about how the quality of car in the training ground car park had gone up over the last few years — the salary bill has evidently exploded. |
