I used to have quite a few problems but (touch wood) have been OK for years. I found that Pilates was the answer to strengthen core muscles. It was recommended by the Consultant at the hospital after I had a fall playing badminton. The big trouble is getting yourself past the point where either you can't move or have to keep moving in order to beat/walk through the incoming spasms. I became so desperate at one point I would have taken myself off a bridge. Once in a blue moon now I twist or do something and end up sitting on a hot water bottle until the tightness disappears. I've found sleep helps... if you can. Unfortunately I can't say that I am so good at doing the Pilates now as once my teacher left and the next one kept giving warnings to "not do this one and not do that one if..." the satisfaction gained from the exercise disappeared - but we make sure we go for a walk every day and this seems to help. Once after spending weeks sweeping everything on the floor into a pile so I only had to bend down once I did the gentle Pilates floor exercise where you lie flat with knees up, take a breath and then try and push your spine starting with your neck into the floor vertebra by vertebra and breathing out I was greeted by a crunch that made me hold my breath but when I got up everything seemed to be back in place. I'd previously spent years with a system of rolling over onto one side in order to stand up to get out of bed. A physio managed to sort out a frozen shoulder I'd had for months after doing something silly by just putting pressure on the muscles in the right place. The GP was absolutely no help at all with that one. Good luck Elizabeth and fingers crossed you find your answer. |
