Adrian, what the excerpt from the article you gave doesn't include is the statement from TfL that the incorrect figures were not those used to make a safety assessment of the junction. TfL's press department seems to have sexed up the original figures and they do seem to have form at this. That said, even with the exaggerated numbers it is hard to understand the case for the extra lane on safety grounds. Hogarth Roundabout is statistically very safe because no vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists use it.
