The inclusion of the ASL's is odd as I don't think local cycling campaigners wanted them. It must be something to do with DfT guidelines on these projects. It is doubly strange as motorcyclists won't be permitted to use them. The danger to them has been the rational given to justify this scheme and, if they were allowed to use the ASLs, it would reduce risk for them. In practice it is likely the ASLs will be ignored. Once one driver in one of the four lanes moves into one, others will follow. As a result I don't think they will cause congestion. They may cause a rise in collisions though. If traffic is approaching the roundabout and the light turns red the following cars may be unaware that there is an ASL and not be expecting a car in front to stop earlier. Obviously this would not happen if driver universally stuck to the speed limit and observed a safe distance but they don't so rear end shunts may increase. |
