Sadly the collapse in sterling (against all major currencies) makes us all poorer, given how much we import. But of far greater relevance and not given the same media profile is the increase in gilt yields, which is the government's borrowing cost. Its approaching 4.5% today (by context it was 1% in January), with the biggest jump last Friday since the original Black Friday. The chanchellor signalled massive new borrowing in the mini budget, then briefed over the weekend of more to come, at a time when we are already running a huge deficit. This is not sustainable. Its going to get worse, as its not clear foreign investors are willing to fund his gambling.
