Of course they didn't claim asylum on arrival - they weren't refugees, but genuine visitors from non-visa countries. So they were able to fly to the UK, for the privilege of being detained on arrival. But nationals of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Ethiopia or almost any of the world's most benighted countries can't just hop on a plane without a visa. The carrier would be fined. One other point: if they can get here, refugees may eventually be granted asylum, but the system is designed to discourage them. They can't even work until at lest twelve months of waiting for a decision on their asylum application. |
