They pay the smugglers because they CANNOT buy tickets for boat or plane. For that you need a visa. And the carriers get fined if they allow someone to travel without a visa - and have to pay to take them away again. So it doesn't happen. A few people fly here for work or study (on a visa to do that) and then claim asylum. Most fleeing war or oppression can't do that. And in answer to "There are systems in place which everyone should abide by….." If only there were! But there is no system and no queue. You cannot claim asylum at an embassy, consulate, port or online. NONE of the resettlement schemes are open. Even the Dubs scheme for separated children is closed. People fleeing Afghanistan (apart from those on ARAP) have no scheme either - the government said it would introduce one but hasn't. So some of those now crossing by little boat have fled the Taliban since August. Some have worked alongside British forces, diplomats and companies and are thus targets now. |
