The delightful thing about Staveley Road was the sight of the Cherry Blossom trees lining the road on both sides..and of course the attractive middle class(!) 1930's type houses too. But the School in the early 50's ..as I have said.. was tough. Maybe it was the thought of "Bung the barrell" or the threat of the tawres again. Of all the teachers names mentioned I remember Mr Hook the Science master and he was pleasant. Shortish with dark thinning hair, glasses and a pipe?,he had a separate part of the School all to himself. He had a large concrete nisson type hut/building..which was to the left side of the School. No tuck shop at this school..we had to nip down to Lusbys the Bakers in Fauconberg Road. Further to the left was the football pitch..which stretched to where the first V2 had landed. (I headed in two goals one game...will always remember that). The names of others pupils included Geoff Snell, Roland Havard, John Matthews, the Scarrots, The Bennetts, the Frenches...and Charlie Derby I left after 18 months in 1952/3 having passed some technical exam and was moved to the Grammar School...(no Comprehensive system in those days..if you failed the 11+ exam you generally missed out....especially if you were a late beginner.) Anyone remember a teacher called Willie Watler? and a Mr Jenkins?. Wasn't it a gymnasium hall that was built on the football pitch..alongside Staveley Road (where the V2 memorial is now.) I believe there was an asbestos problem with the building..or was it inferior concrete used..but as Paul says the whole lot was pulled down. Wasn't it surprising that an upmarket housing estate was built on those grounds. |
