Following on from another thread covering the decline of insects etc, I was reminded of something I heard the other day. Apparently the Greeks used to keep Little Owls in their houses, to eat the cockroaches. Indeed so enamoured were the Greeks with this eco-friendly means of pest control that the goddess Athene, from whom Athens got its name, is traditionally depicted accompanied by a Little Owl. Which is thought to be how owls got their reputation for being wise, since Athene (or Minerva for the Romans) is the goddess of Wisdom. Meanwhile, the Latin name for Little Owl is "Athene Noctua". |
