I sense that Brian is somewhat skeptical of the euro and certainly of the UK being in the euro zone. He has a point about thinking carefully about the UK joining - we would have to be sure it suited our sort of economy. It obviously suits Germany and France - it keep their salaries and factory output relatively low compared to how such large manufacturing economies would have fared had they kept their old currencies. Smaller countries such as Greece suffer a bit as their currency is now aligned to that of larger and more productive economies.
Obviously the UK is not a predominantly manufacturing economy, although it is large. Nor do we want to be. So the euro zone is not for us. We want to be a modern virtual economy. That is, not really an economy that works for everyone.
