I think what Michael is reporting is the beginning of the construction of the sports hub which will be next to the bowling club. The sports hub will be a large building (we have reported on it and the difficulties with it in detail in our Newsletters - see gunnersburyfriends.org) and building it will generate a huge amount of lorry traffic. If that were to come through the main entrance to the car park, it would close the car park until the summer of 2019. The alternative is to use the entrance on the corner of Lionel Road and Pope's Lane, and the fencing is to protect the public from contractors' traffic as it moves across to the site. I am not trying to justify or excuse all this - I am simply reporting what we have picked up from the very few public information meetings offered by the project team. We expect the building of the arenas for Lovebox and Citadel, and then the Secret Cinema, will be organised through the entrance from Lionel Road near the Potomac (which was used for building the Mela in previous years). As far as we know, the audience for Lovebox and Citadel will be "funnelled" through a path made by security fencing across the old golf course - from the main gate down to the arena sites. The audience for Secret Cinema was going to led from Acton Town down to the gate at the bottom of the park on the North Circular and across to their arena on the site of the old cricket pitch, avoiding the wildflower meadow. There were some doubts about this from residents of the Gunnersbury Triangle, and people who were familiar with crossing the North Circular Road, so that decision may change. The upshot of all this is that, despite the historic core having been lovingly and expensively restored, the sports field and the land in the south of the park is going to look like a building site this year. Still, look on the bright side - if next month's public enquiry into the building of the misnamed Chiswick Curve goes against us, we will have a 30+ story building looming over the park to distract us - the developers claim it will be so beautiful it will add to our enjoyment of the views. |
