I would have thought that the most obvious reason for May calling a GE, is so as to secure an unequivocal mandate for all the humiliations the UK is about to undergo in the forthcoming "negotiations". More especially as the overall electorate never chose her as their Prime Minister. That's the way democracy works. Whenever politicians are faced with unpalatable choices, by offering themselves for election and winning they can then blame the voters for whatever subsequently transpires, as it was they who returned them to office. Ideally May should have called a GE before triggering Article 50 but than that would have been contrary to her seeming intention. Which appears to be to teach the voters a lesson by carrying out their wishes regardless (all 51% of them), whether or not by so doing the UK economy is destroyed in the process. michael adams |
