I have spent the last few days in the building where the Treaty of Versailles was signed 98 years ago next week, trying to explain to colleagues from Europe and elsewhere why (some of) the UK voted for Brexit. No-one could understand why we committed an act of collective madness last year, nor believe that we would actually go through with it. To the latter, I had to explain that we probably would do. As to explaining why May called the election, the only credible explanation I could come up with is that she recognises that the economy is now in decline, which is likely to accelerate, and would rather try her chances in an election now rather than see out the full term of the current parliament before going to the country. |
