I thought the same thing Richard, as I read these comments. The wit and incisive intelligence of Thomas Barry is a huge loss to this forum and to London. Not that other comments on this thread are not worthwhile, mind. Road pricing has got to come eventually. TfL's crude congestion charge could be refined into a system that charges varying amounts by time of day, kms travelled (at least within the current zone) and class of vehicle. It just takes a bit of willpower and political courage. Ditto the Oyster could deduct in fine gradulations for tube journeys made in peak of the peak, shoulder of peak, contrapeak etc. Even a bit of demand smoothing would help. Failing that, perhaps "beam me across London" Scotty. Message sent this fine lunchtime from Wellington NZ, where drivers believe even a momentary delay is serious congestion. |
