The example of the woman made homeless reported on the radio station doesn't really add up. If she had been a long term resident she would qualify for emergency housing provision from their local authority at the very least particularly with an elderly relative. The chances are that if she lived and worked in the area she would qualify for a longer term solution to her housing issue. These days this doesn't usually involve a council house but there would be options. This story is clearly more complicated than has been presented - at one point Barnet is mentioned and next Brent.

The bigger picture is that the Government spends billions on housing benefit every year and the budget to house asylum seekers is a tiny proportion of this. Once the asylum status has been granted and the refugee can work they are far more likely to support themselves than the average citizen. Overall successful asylum seekers make a positive financial contribution to the economy and are ultimately significant net contributors to the tax take i.e. they pay more tax than they claim benefits. If this poor woman's plight is genuine it is not the fault of asylum seekers.
