I didnt realise for a long time that many on the left are in fact 'internationalists', and happy to be recognised as such. This seems to mean that the claim of a refugee from Eritrea is every bit as valid as the claim of a life long resident of the UK. This explains why many on the left have no problem with this kind of issue. Regardless of left or right, this is a world view that I cannot subscribe to. We should provide humanitarian aid and support overseas development, but need to recognise that the job of a nation state is in the first instance to look after its citizens.
