Some day someone at TfL or NR is going to have to bite the bullet and sort out Gunnersbury Station. Options - 1) a second entrance on Wellesley Road with direct platform access. Pluses - make access easier for those coming from Grove Park and the new Lionel Road station. Minuses - doesn't help those going to and from Chiswick Business Park. 2) restore the original station layout by removing the adjacent multi-level car park and putting in a second platform. Pluses - would enable the whole station to be rebuilt to modern standards. Minuses - adjacent developers would demand an arm and a leg for the site. 3) put in an extended bridge from the ticket hall to the platform with a second staircase and lift - similar to those installed at Clapham Junction in the last few years. Pluses - would ease the overcrowding on the stairs. Minuses - a compromise solution that would still leave the ticket hall overcrowded. None of these options are particularly cheap to do (the legacy of the incredibly foolish decision to sell off part of the station and reduce it to a single island platform in the 1960s, presumably by British Rail) but sooner or later they will need to do something - let us hope there isn't a fatal accident due to overcrowding first. |
